Public Health Assistant

The Public Health Assistant is an entry-level, onsite, full-time position that strengthens City of Pharr Public Health Department initiatives through dependable administrative and community-facing support. This role exists to help residents access timely information and to sustain smooth program operations. Key responsibilities include front-line customer assistance; scheduling and coordination; records and database maintenance; preparation of program materials; support for outreach and public education activities; social media and basic communications support; and cross-coverage for multiple program areas as departmental priorities shift.

Required knowledge and skills:

  • Working knowledge of public health concepts, community resources, and health promotion
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, social media platforms, and data entry systems
  • Strong organization, time management, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and apply sound judgment in sensitive situations

Qualified applicants are encouraged to apply for this Public Health Assistant opportunity.

A typical day for the Public Health Assistant begins by preparing the office for resident inquiries and reviewing updates from Public Health Department staff. Throughout the day, you will alternate between assisting walk-ins and callers, updating program logs, and organizing documents so information is current and easy to retrieve. You may help assemble educational materials for a community event, post a scheduled update to departmental social media, and coordinate with partners when residents need referrals. The work week is 40 hours, with flexibility required for occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays to support time-sensitive community needs.

The City of Pharr offers a practical benefits package designed to support employees’ health and time away from work, including Medical, Dental, Vision, and Paid Time Off.
